What check engine level means?
The check engine oil light could come on if the system is experiencing low pressure due to a bad oil pump, for example. This could mean that oil supplies are depleted or that the system isn’t circulating adequate oil to keep the engine lubricated.

The engine oil level should be in the cross hatch section and at or slightly below the full mark when the engine is cool. If the engine oil is low, it could indicate the engine is either leaking or consuming oil.
What’s the difference between 5w 20 and 5w 30?

Does oil level go down when hot?
Regular oil will experience normal expansion and contraction, which means you will get around the same readings regardless of temperature. Newer cars with electronic oil level controllers will only measure the engine oil when warm and stay at a flat surface level.
What if oil level is too high?
When too much oil is added, the level in the oil pan becomes too high. That allows a fast-moving lobed rod called the crankshaft to come into contact with the oil and essentially aerate it. The result is a foamy, frothy substance that cannot properly lubricate the engine.
How do you know when your oil is low?
With the engine off, open the car’s hood and find the dipstick. Pull the dipstick out from the engine and wipe any oil off from its end. Then insert the dipstick back into its tube and push it all the way back in. The dipstick shows the oil is low and needs to be topped off.
