What is a Procrit injection for?
PROCRIT® is a prescription medicine used to treat anemia. People with anemia have a lower–than–normal number of red blood cells (RBCs). PROCRIT® works like the human protein called erythropoietin to help your body make more RBCs. PROCRIT® is used to reduce or avoid the need for RBC transfusions.
What are the side effects of a Procrit shot?
Common side effects of PROCRIT® include:
- Joint, muscle, or bone pain.
- Fever.
- Cough.
- Rash.
- Nausea.
- Vomiting.
- Soreness of mouth.
- Itching.
How long does a Procrit shot last?
Each single-use Procrit vial (bottle) of this medicine is for one use only. Throw it away after one use, even if there is still medicine left inside. Throw away any leftover medicine in a multi-dose vial 21 days after the first use.
How often are Procrit injections given?
This medication is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 3 times a week. Patients getting this medication before surgery may have a special dosing schedule. Hemodialysis patients should receive this medication by injection into a vein.
How does PROCRIT make you feel?
unusual tiredness; a seizure (convulsions); high blood sugar–increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor; low potassium–leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling; or.
Can PROCRIT make you tired?
Rarely, this medication may suddenly stop working well after a period of time because your body may make antibodies that make it work less well, and a very serious anemia can result. Tell your doctor right away if symptoms of anemia return (such as increased tiredness, low energy, pale skin color, shortness of breath).

It usually takes 2 to 6 weeks before the number of red blood cells increases in your body. Individual results with PROCRIT® may vary. There are many different types of side effects that can occur with PROCRIT®.
