12mm is just under 1/2″, that is the offset. But your point about the backspacing is correct, go to TireRack, or any of the giant online wheel and tire places, and you’ll find the vast majority of JK aftermarket wheels have around 4.5″ backspacing.

You can for sure run 37’s on a D30. Weld on some C-Gussets at least and re-gear to 4.56 or 4.88 and you’ll be good. The weak point is the C’s but once gusseted, you will be good. The next weak point will be the axle shafts, keep those stock to remain the weak point.
