All you need to know about the Engineering Studies

Engineering is the most common choice of career in India, and more than 10 lakh students appear for engineering entrance exams every year. As the number of students aspiring to become an engineer is very high, getting admission into the right engineering college in India is highly competitive and challenging. Research confirms that India produces more than 1.5 million engineers every year and has more than 4000 universities that offer engineering courses. That is why India provides the highest number of engineers in the world.

In India, most of the engineering courses are called B.Tech courses, and even if some courses are called BE courses, they follow the same syllabus and curriculum as B.Tech ones. But getting admission into a B.Tech course is highly competitive, and that is why students who aspire to get admission into their dream college have to study a lot and put in years of hard work. The major B.Tech entrance exam, JEE mains, is considered to be one of the toughest entrance exams in the country. Generally, students start preparing for B.Tech entrance exams after they are done with their 10th-grade final exams, but many students even start studying since the 6th grade. But studying is not just the only thing you need to do to get admission in your favourite college; you also need to understand the admission process and get to know everything you can about it. So, below is a quick guide for B.Tech Admission in 2020.

What is B.Tech?

The full form of B.Tech is a Bachelor of Technology. B.Tech in India is a 4-year undergraduate course, which is mandatory for students who aspire to become an engineer. It is divided into eight semesters, and the syllabus is according to the specialisations. B. Tech has six significant branches. They are Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical engineering, Management engineering, and Geotechnical engineering. Under these six branches, there are more than a hundred different categories of engineering. According to the branch the students choose, B.Tech prepares them for a career as an engineer in that particular industry. After completing B.Tech, students can go into advanced branches of engineering by getting a Masters in technology or M.Tech.

B.Tech Specialisations in India

The field of engineering keeps evolving regularly, and new specialisations keep emerging from time to time. In India, B.Tech has several specialisations. Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Computer Science Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering

All these specialisations offer great job opportunities and make the student’s future bright. But with the technological advancement and development of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering is the most sought course to do. The opportunities are limitless, and salaries are also very high. Also, because it is in demand, the entrance exams cut off scores are generally very high for this specialisation.

Eligibility criteria for B.Tech

The essential eligibility criteria for admission to any B.Tech course is:

  • Students must have passed the 10+2 exams from a recognised board with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as their core subjects.
  • Students must have gotten a minimum aggregate score of sixty per cent in all the subjects combined.

Please keep in mind that the eligibility criteria may vary from college to college.

Admission process for B.Tech

B.Tech is one of the most popular and toughest courses. Lakhs of students dream of becoming an engineer, and the competition is cut-throat. So to judge the students fairly and give admission to them on merit, standardised entrance exams are conducted once a year. These exams test the students on the essential aspects of engineering that are in line with the syllabus of 11th and 12th grade. So after students successfully graduate with the science stream in 12th grade, they appear for the B.Tech entrance exams. Then students apply for getting admission into their favourite colleges and based on their entrance exam performance; they are shortlisted for counselling and the final screening process. After completing all the above requirements, students get an offer letter from the college.

B.Tech Entrance Exams

B. Tech engineering exams are of 3 kinds:

  • National level engineering entrance exams

These entrance exams are for students who want to get admission to an all India level Engineering college. Many private and state-level institutes also accept the score of National level engineering exams. The two national level engineering entrance exams are:

  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains

This national level entrance exam is a screening test for students who want to get admission into the top engineering colleges of the country.

  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced

It is the second stage-screening test for students who want to get admission into the best colleges of the country, IITs. Only the top ranking 2,24,000 students from JEE mains can appear for JEE Advanced exam.

  • State Level Engineering Entrance exams

Some states also offer state-level engineering entrance exams for admission to professional courses available in state-funded colleges. Examples of state-level engineering entrance exams are:

  • Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE)

Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam Technical University conducts this exam for students of Uttar Pradesh, who aspire to get admission in engineering colleges affiliated with the AKTU.

  • West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE)

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE) offers this exam for students who aspire to get admission into colleges aided by the state government.

  • Institute specific engineering entrance exams

Some colleges conduct their entrance exams to screen students for admission. For example:

  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT)
  • VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE)

Best colleges for B.Tech

Some of the premier B.Tech colleges in India are the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), the Indraprastha institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and the National Institute of Technology (NITs). But apart from them, several other private colleges are great for pursuing B.tech courses such as:

  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani
  • Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore
  • PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore
  • Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune
